- VINE BEARS CANE-Ca 1900 -Fashioned
VINE BEARS CANE-Ca 1900 -Fashioned of substantial wild vine branch with extreme quirky grown protuberances and a naturally slightly bent and widening handle. At a close look, one realizes that the handle shows three full-bodied bears carved over one another in a naturalistic, yet intricate composition. They show short tails, powerful limbs and finely engraved surfaces, suggesting a thick and shaggy fur. Furthermore, the bulky mammals are characterized by broad paws, small heads with long snouts and round ears betraying acute senses of smell and hearing. -Brimming with seductive powers, this cane survived in its integral entirety with a metal ferrule and is emphasized by a rich and dark age patina. It is great to use or add to a displayed collection. -The motif of the bear came into fashion in Western Europe with the emerging Russian taste in the middle of the 19th century. In northern countries, it replaces the lion as king of the beasts and represents power and warfare. -H. 4 ½” x 2”, O.L. 36 ½” -$400-$500
